Miscellaneous AVGN Translation Topics

In 2006, the Angry Video Game Nerd grew Internet-famous for posting his unconventional video game reviews on YouTube. These reviews ushered in a new era in how gamers share and discuss their personal experiences, in a way that wasn’t really feasible before YouTube.

In 2014, I decided to write some Legends of Localization articles that followed along with the AVGN’s game reviews. I wanted to personally learn more about retro Japanese games, retro Japanese gamers, retro game translation, and how everyone – regardless of birthplace – struggled with the crappiness of all those old video games. I didn’t get far – I only ended up writing these four articles:

In these articles, we’ll briefly look at translation issues in each games and how these issues changed the gameplay experience for different people around the world. We’ll also peek at some of the comments that Japanese viewers have left about these specific AVGN episodes. So although these articles are quite short, there’s still a lot to find and discover.

While I don’t have any plans to revisit this AVGN article series, I felt it would be a waste to take the existing articles down, so I’m leaving them up here for everyone’s entertainment and possible future reference.
