Helpful Text Addition
In MOTHER 2, after the Tonzura Brothers bring you back to Threed, the main guy says, “By the way, why was it you needed to come back to this town? Was it because you forgot something important here?”
In EarthBound, the localizers added a little bit to that: “By the way, why did you need to come back here? You must have forgotten some very important item or gadget here…”
Basically, the word “gadget” was added to give players additional help in remembering that the Sky Runner is in Threed.
Repairing with Paint
In EarthBound, this guy says, “We painted over all the damaged parts of the Sky Runner. Now I wonder how you start this thing up?”
In MOTHER 2, he says, “We tried painting the outside of this Sky Walker to make it look like it was fixed, but we don’t know how machines work, so we can’t get it to run.”
It’s a very subtle difference in nuance, but basically in MOTHER 2, it sounds like the guy knew painting the outside wasn’t going to fix it, but in EarthBound, it sounds like he’s dumb and thinks that all he needed to do was paint the Sky Runner to make it work again. Also, the MOTHER 2 version makes it sound like they would’ve started it up earlier if they could have. Just imagine a crazy paint guy who doesn’t know anything about machines flying around in that thing 😯
Fixing for Summers
The little bit of text Jeff says slightly differs between the two games. It’s not that much of a difference really, but here it is anyway.
Japanese Version (basic translation) | English Translation |
Oh! This isn’t that broken at all! All right, hold on for a bit. | Ah! Here’s the problem, and it’s not too tough to fix. Hang on for a second or two… |
Okay! It should work now! | There! that should do it! |
Except, if we get into the Sky Walker now, it’ll wind up taking us back to Winters. | Now, if we board, the Sky Runner will take us back to Winters. |
We’ll need Dr. Andonuts’ help to modify it to go to Summers. | With Dr. Andonuts’ help, I can modify the machine to fly to Summers. |
In the case that Dad, no, I mean Dr. Andonuts, isn’t there… then I’ll have to figure it out on my own somehow. | If Dad, I mean Dr. Andonuts, is not available, I’ll have to figure it out by myself. |
But, for now, let’s return to the lab in Winters. | Anyway, let’s go back to the lab in Winters. |
That’s our only choice. | …That’s it… |
Let’s go! | Go, machine, go! |
Mostly MOTHER 2 makes things a little clearer, like the fact that the Sky Walker is programmed to return to the lab. In EarthBound, at first, it kinda almost sounds like Winters is just a stop along the way that they have to go to first on the way to Summers.
