There’s not much new happening in Mysidia just yet, but the elder does have something new to say:
Final Fantasy IV (Super Famicom)
Final Fantasy II (Super NES)
Japanese Version (basic translation)
English Translation
Palom and Porom have….!
Palom and Porom…!
I see…. So those two were able to surpass me in the end….
I see… They fulfilled their destiny…
The English translation changes his line entirely. I honestly can’t think of a good explanation for this change, it’s pretty strange.
Also, for reference, there’s a nuance in the Japanese line that surpassing him was a good thing. I’m not really sure how turning themselves into stone equates to surpassing him, though. Maybe in terms of resolve?
Finally, the original Japanese line displays all this text here over the course of two text windows for dramatic effect. In comparison, the English translation plops all the text onto one text window, similar to other instances that we’ve seen in the translation.
The fan translation translates this line as:
Palom and Porom!
I see…but did Fate intend for them to sacrifice themselves…?
So we see that this isn’t really a translation, but an attempt to prettify the text that was in the official English release.
I'm taking a relaxed break from Legends of Localization at the moment, but I still plan to add more articles and comparisons from time to time.
I'll also slowly be improving and updating various sections of the site. During these times, pages, links, and images will surely break somewhere - I apologize in advance. I've also turned off comments for now until I can reasonably keep up with them again.
In the meantime, check out some of these other articles:
